Jerome and the Knowledge of Hebrew in Early Church
Why were there so few Christians during Jerome’s time who had a firm command of the Hebrew language? In this episode, we respond to a listener’s question concerning the knowledge of Hebrew in the ancient church. We discuss, among other things, the status of the Septuagint, previous Jewish-Christian controversies over the Jewish corruption of the text of the Hebrew Bible and other vital considerations for understanding the status of the Hebrew text of the Bible in early Christian communities. Join us this week as we examine Jerome’s unique role in translating the Bible from Hebrew into Latin.
