Origen’s Life, Writings, Reception and Orthodoxy – CHS 0023

Origen’s Life, Writings, Reception and Orthodoxy

Was Origen of Alexandria an orthodox-Catholic Christian? In other words, did Origen possess an orthodox faith? In this episode we briefly discuss the complexities involved in answering this question. We first review the various condemnations issued against Origen’s theology around the year 400 and later in 553. Then we discuss the complexities of Origen’s original work and the difficulties surrounding its later translation by the controversial figure Rufinus. We conclude by highlighting the linguistic and manuscript challenges involved in getting at a satisfactory answer to this question.
